  • PORTAGE POINT WOODS PRESERVE | ONEKAMA, MI

    The Portage Point Woods Preserve in Eastern Lake Michigan near Onekama is crucial in preserving coastal ecological processes, particularly dynamic foredune and successional backdune systems. The shelter in the back dune forests is essential for various spring wildflowers such as trillium, hepatica, jack-in-the-pulpit, spring beauty, dwarf ginseng, and bloodroot to thrive.

  • ARCADIA DUNES: C.S. MOTT NATURE PRESERVE

    Also referred to as the C.S. Mott Preserve, Arcadia Dunes sprawls across 3,600 acres just north of the Manistee/Benzie County line, divided by a state highway. This sanctuary boasts 2 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, coastal bluffs adorned with impressive perched dunes, as well as hardwood forests and grasslands. Spanning from one end to the other are 15 miles of trails, conveniently accessible from major trailheads just off M-22. On the east side of the highway lies Dry Hill Trails, a 10-mile loop crafted by the International Mountain Biking Association. On the west side M-22, you'll find Old Baldy Trail, a 3.7-mile network leading to breathtaking views atop a perched dune.

    INNKEEPER TIP: The marsh hike on the boardwalks is a great alternative when other trails are muddy.

  • MANISTEE RIVER TRAIL | MESICK, MI

    Explore this 11+ mile trail along the high banks of the Big Manistee River between Tippy Dam and Hodenpyle Dam. Established in 1992, it offers rustic campsites and scenic overlooks. The level trail makes for an easy hike. Extend your adventure with the 23-mile Manistee River Trail/North Country Trail loop. Begin at the North Country Trail Upper Manistee River Trailhead for a hike through dense hardwoods, or head to the Udell Rollways trailhead near Big-M for a different experience.
